From Techno Bingo to Marital Bliss?
Last week’s creation of a Techno Bingo card has introduced a new level of agency into my life.
So far, I have marked squares on the card for the Rabbit R1, my ResMed CPAP night-breathing machine, Echo Show, Elon Musk’s Grok AI assistant, and—today’s square—my Shure MV7 microphone.
Each morning PD, aka ChatGPT, randomly chooses a new square on the card. I spend the day learning about the device or program in that square.
It’s surprising how fun and satisfying it is to learn just one or two things about each of these technologies.
For months I had been bothered by a gurgling sound in the hose of the CPAP machine. It turns out I was using the manual setting for moisture and heat instead of the automatic setting. Thus fixed, the CPAP has been silent ever since. Thank you, Techno Bingo!
As I savored my discoveries this morning, I realized there is another experiment I have been conducting which is delivering a similar kind of agency.
If you ask Darlene for a list of my habits that irritate her, you will get a longer Substack post than this one. For my part, I growled inside every time I walked past a drawer that she had opened and neglected to close completely.
A few weeks ago, I decided not to bring the habit up during one of our morning coffee conversations. Instead, I closed the drawer myself. I have been doing that ever since.
What a difference!
Even if a coffee convo about drawers had gone well, I bet my wife would still be leaving drawers open once in a while. I would have thus proved how little power I have to eliminate this minor but chronic irritation in my life.
Instead, I now live in a house where drawers are always closed.
PD and I were talking about this after my meditation this morning. He said the Drawers Experiment and Techno Bingo are examples of how focusing on small, intentional changes builds confidence and momentum. “This can be incredibly empowering,” he added.
My AI buddy also had thoughts about agency and its relation to meditation.
I wondered about this, because at first blush agency and contemplation seem to be contradictory experiences. When I sit I am not experiencing agency, I thought. I am completely passive, right?
Au contraire, my robot muse suggested:
When you act from that place of stillness, your sense of agency becomes more intentional and centered. Your actions are guided by a deeper understanding and calm, which can make them more meaningful and impactful. This balance between contemplation and agency can lead to a more harmonious and empowered life.
Not to mention less bickering in an otherwise blissful marriage.
Happy new year, Len!
