A Beacon for Sailors
Often during the night, I sit in a peach-colored chair in our bedroom here in Ocean Park and look out at the calming white-then-green flashes from the Wood Island Lighthouse.
Darlene and I toured the lighthouse yesterday with our friends Marie, Pam, and Duce. We took a 20-minute boat ride from Biddeford Pool to the island, walked a mile to the lighthouse, and spent about an hour climbing the spiral steps to the top of the lighthouse, touring the keeper’s house, and taking photos.
I wish we’d had much more time before the call came to return to the boat. But even a brief experience of the island was inspiring.
At the top of the spiral stairs, I touched two big lights—one white and one green.
Now when I look out across Saco Bay at night I will feel an even closer connection to the source of the guiding light from Wood Island.
