A Genius Tip for Big Trips
A text from our Maine friends Bill Jose and Jane Mullen:
Hi Len
I hope you have a wonderful trip to France. Look forward to seeing you after you return.
I thought I would pass along this from Jane's family. They always talked about three ways to enjoy the trip.
1. First you enjoy the pre-trip, the excitement of the planning and anticipation.
2. Next you enjoy the actual trip.
3. Finally after you've returned you can enjoy the post trip, enjoying the memories and the inspiration.

With two days to go before our voyage to France, I found this insight very helpful.
Without it, I realized, I can conflate all three parts of an upcoming trip into one ball of anxiety, euphoria, and tension.
Instead, I have been happily working on details of the trip this morning—making a reservation for lunch at the hotel in Nice for Friday, confirming our seats on the TGV train to Lyon, etc.
When we arrive, Phase Two will begin, and then the post-trip. It reminds me of the helpfulness of One Day at a Time.
I will continue to upload the Morning Journal each weekday to the Alexa flash briefings network. But I may not post as much here on the Substack newsletter, beyond a link to the audio and a photo.
In past travel, I’ve had a tendency to commit to an obsessive daily schedule of photos and text. Darlene has less-than-fond memories of times when I was trying to upload something on a skimpy Wi-Fi network, delaying our departure for a cool tour of something interesting.
So we’ll see. I like the idea of traveling lighter this trip, the better for my curiosity to guide me each day.
Bon voyage : ).
