Letter from St. Thomas
To Whom It May Concern:
I love what you’ve done
with the place—well,
not much, really—
same oddly close clouds
puffed up above
the white yachts
in Charlotte Amalie.
More than 40 years ago
a woman in love
arrived here wondering
if her guy was ready
for the real thing—
she wore a sandwich board
for a café, then waitressed
at Frenchman’s Reef,
skinny dipped at Lime Tree.
That’s where we dined
last night, her tinkling tales
showing me how lucky
I’d been to find her
in Wyoming, follow her
here and back
and everywhere else
that matters
