A tough night
It’s not that I’ve been a longtime fan of the Kansas City Chiefs.
In fact, it wasn’t until a neighbor of mine here on Sanibel introduced me to the team’s wonderfulness this year that I began reading occasional stories in The Athletic about Patrick Mahomes and the possibility of a three-peat.
I loved learning that Mahomes in elementary school in Texas wasn’t exceptionally fast but his reaction times were off the chart.
“He was a natural at understanding momentum and space,” one story said.
Yesterday morning I read about how the Chiefs were taking the haters in stride. “Mahomes and his teammates find it amusing,” Mike Jones wrote. “They embrace the role of villain and continue their pursuit of history.”
Instead, the Philadelphia Eagles won the Super Bowl, 40-22.
Mahomes, who is 29 years old, showed a lot of class, I thought, in his post-game comments to the media.
“The turnovers hurt and I take full blame for that,” he said. “Those early turnovers swing the momentum of the game.”
On X he wrote: “Appreciate all the love and support from #ChiefsKingdom. I let y'all down today. I’ll always continue to work and try and learn and be better for it. Want to give thanks to God for every opportunity he has given me. We will be back."
Me too.
Welcome to Chiefs Kingdom, Len!
