Day 3
Hosting our grandsons Jake, 10, and Ryan, 8, for four days and nights is something we’ve looked forward to for a long time. Halfway through, very little has gone according to plan.
First, I got a bad cold the day they arrived. That led to a day of Darlene’s taking the lead for “little things,” as the boys call it—pool, TV, reading Kindle books, etc.—while I napped, drank liquids, and tried to get better fast.
Yesterday, we were all ready to go in the car to pick blueberries at Libby & Son U-Pick. Luckily we checked before pulling out of the driveway. Closed for the day.
The boys came up with a great Plan B. Jake had found a brochure at Hannafords for Raptor Falls, a miniature golf place in Arundel that had big dinosaurs among the holes. It was cool, and we got a few holes-in-one.
On the way to Raptor Falls we listened to a well-done podcast the boys turned us on to, Smash Boom Best. It’s a hilarious, pun-filled debate show for kids. The episode we listened to pitted trains against planes. Planes won.
AI Pin came up with the afternoon destination, Urban Air Adventure in South Portland. Zip lines, a rope course, a pool of white plastic balls to jump into, and trampolines everywhere. Darlene and I kept an eye on them from comfortable vibrating chairs—we didn’t opt for using our credit cards to turn the vibration on.
Now we’re packing for Great Diamond Island. Our ferry from Portland leaves at 11 a.m. We will spend the night in a hotel on the island and maybe do some biking.
That’s the plan, subject to change.
New memories on deck.
